South African learners are now able to again participate in school sport and extra-curricular activities provided that a COVID-19 compliance officer is appointed at each venue to ensure that health and safety protocols are in place. Physical education ensures the holistic development and education of learners, as well as healthy interaction and cohesion.

 

Basic Education Minister, Mrs Angie Motshekga, has announced the amendment of direction 11 of directives in Government Notice No. 42 in the Government Gazette No. 44154 of 12 February 2021, on 27 March 2021, regarding the re-opening of schools for sport and extra-curricular activities.

 

The activities that are permitted to resume without any spectators, and with social distancing measures in place, are school sport matches; physical education; extra-curricular activities; and inter-school, district, provincial and national sport tournaments. In addition, all participants must undergo health and temperature screening before the event; hand sanitisers must be available at the entrance gate; and a register of all officials and learners from visiting and hosting schools attending the match or event must be kept by the hosting school. A maximum of 100 persons for indoor venues and a maximum of 250 persons for outdoor venues are permitted, or a 50% capacity of a larger venue. All sport equipment must also be sanitised before and after use. The TeacherConnect Application may also be used to assist with the administration of the registration process.
